Understanding Anxiety and Finding the Right Treatment

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, often characterised by feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear about a particular situation or the future.

If you’re looking for anxiety therapy in Brisbane, you’re not alone. Many people experience constant overthinking, difficulty switching off, persistent worry or tension and feeling mentally “on edge”.

For many seeking help, finding the best psychologist in Brisbane for personalised support can make a significant difference.

There are effective anxiety disorder treatments available, including cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy and treatment and specialised anxiety counselling methods to address the specific challenges of each disorder.

Therapy focuses on understanding the underlying patterns that maintain the anxiety, reducing avoidance and safety behaviours, and building emotional regulation skills.

    Types of Anxiety Disorders

    Anxiety Therapy Brisbane

Social Anxiety / Social Phobia: Intense fear of social interactions, often leading individuals to avoid events or social situations. Social anxiety therapy can provide targeted strategies to help manage these fears and increase confidence in social settings.

Generalised Anxiety: A pervasive, ongoing anxiety that doesn’t tie to any one specific situation. This persistent worry can feel overwhelming. Generalised anxiety therapy helps uncover and address the root causes of this continued fear.

Panic Attacks: A sudden, intense feeling of terror, often accompanied by physical symptoms like trembling, sweating, or a rapid heartbeat. Anxiety attack treatment focuses on identifying triggers and developing effective coping strategies to reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks.

Phobia: A specific fear of an object or situation, such as animals, storms, or certain places. Phobia treatments are designed to help individuals gradually confront and manage these fears.

      FAQs

Anxiety can present in many ways, including excessive worrying, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, and physical symptoms like a racing heart or shortness of breath. Our Brisbane and Sydney psychologists help clients identify the signs of anxiety and work through them with proven therapy techniques tailored to their individual needs.

Therapy for anxiety focuses on identifying negative thought patterns, building emotional awareness, and developing healthy coping strategies. At Ascent Psychology, we use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness to help clients in Brisbane and Sydney manage anxiety and improve their daily functioning.

If anxiety is interfering with your ability to work, study, maintain relationships, or enjoy everyday life, it may be time to seek professional help. Our experienced anxiety psychologists in Brisbane and Sydney provide compassionate support and effective treatment to help you regain control and reduce the impact of anxious thoughts.

Anxiety can be triggered by a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. Stress, trauma, unresolved emotions, or changes in life circumstances can all contribute. Our psychologists work with you to explore the root causes of your anxiety and create a therapy plan that promotes long-term emotional resilience.

Yes, Ascent Psychology offers anxiety therapy through secure telehealth sessions for clients across Brisbane, Sydney, and beyond. Online sessions are ideal for individuals who prefer the flexibility and comfort of receiving professional support from home, while still accessing the same high-quality care.

To begin, you can book an initial consultation with one of our anxiety specialists in Brisbane or Sydney through our website or by calling our clinic. During your first session, we’ll discuss your experiences, goals, and the best approach to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Psychodynamic therapy is particularly helpful for individuals experiencing chronic or longstanding anxiety. Unlike short-term symptom-focused approaches, this form of therapy explores deeper emotional patterns, unresolved past experiences, and unconscious conflicts that may be driving persistent anxiety. Our Brisbane and Sydney psychologists use psychodynamic techniques to help clients gain insight into the root causes of their distress, leading to lasting emotional relief and more meaningful, long-term change.

Yes. Psychodynamic therapy is a well-researched, evidence-based treatment shown to produce lasting improvements in anxiety — often with results that continue to deepen even after therapy ends. Unlike approaches that manage symptoms temporarily, psychodynamic therapy creates genuine, lasting change by addressing the underlying emotional causes. Brisbane residents looking for meaningful, long-term anxiety relief consistently benefit from this depth-oriented approach.

In a psychodynamic therapy session, you’ll work collaboratively with your psychologist to explore your thoughts, feelings, memories, and relationship patterns in an open, non-judgmental space. Rather than following a rigid structured programme, sessions are guided by what feels most significant to you. Over time, recurring emotional themes emerge that shed light on the origins of your anxiety — creating self-awareness and internal change that supports lasting relief.

Yes. Anxiety commonly produces physical symptoms including a racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath, muscle tension, headaches, digestive issues, and fatigue. These physical symptoms are real and can be distressing. Understanding the mind-body connection is an important part of effective anxiety treatment.

Psychologists treat a wide range of anxiety disorders including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, health anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each condition has specific, evidence-based treatment approaches tailored to its presentation.
