      FAQs

Depression can affect both your emotional and physical well-being. Common symptoms include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, low energy, changes in appetite or sleep, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness. Our psychologists in Brisbane and Sydney are experienced in recognising and treating all forms of depression, including mild, moderate, and severe presentations.

Therapy helps you explore the underlying causes of depression, shift negative thinking patterns, and build emotional resilience. At Ascent Psychology, our Brisbane and Sydney psychologists use evidence-based approaches like Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Interpersonal Therapy to support lasting recovery from depression.

If feelings of sadness, fatigue, or hopelessness persist for more than two weeks and begin affecting your work, relationships, or daily life, it’s important to seek professional support. Our psychologists in Brisbane and Sydney provide a safe and supportive space to help you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Yes, depression is often triggered by life events such as relationship breakdowns, grief, chronic stress, or major changes in personal circumstances. However, it can also develop gradually without a clear cause. At Ascent Psychology, we help clients understand how their life experiences, thought patterns, and behaviours contribute to low mood — and work towards healing and change.

Yes, online therapy (telehealth) is a convenient and effective way to receive professional support for depression. Our psychologists in Brisbane and Sydney provide telehealth sessions for individuals who prefer the comfort of home or need flexible access to therapy, ensuring you receive the same high standard of care.

You can get started by contacting our team or booking an initial consultation online. Whether you’re based in Brisbane, Sydney, or anywhere in between, we’ll connect you with a psychologist experienced in treating depression and guide you through the first steps of your therapy journey.

Psychodynamic therapy is highly effective for treating longstanding or recurrent depression by exploring the deeper, often unconscious emotional patterns that contribute to low mood. Rather than just addressing surface symptoms, this approach helps individuals understand unresolved conflicts, early relational experiences, and inner emotional struggles that may be fuelling their depression. At Ascent Psychology, our Brisbane and Sydney psychologists use psychodynamic principles to guide clients toward greater self-awareness, emotional insight, and long-term recovery. This deeper form of therapy can lead to lasting change by helping clients make sense of their internal world and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

For many people, yes. Psychodynamic therapy addresses the deep emotional and relational roots of depression, often producing lasting relief without the need for medication. At Ascent Psychology in Brisbane, the focus is on uncovering what’s driving low mood at its source — rather than managing symptoms chemically. Some clients do benefit from a combined approach, and your psychologist can help guide that conversation with your GP.

Depression counselling typically offers emotional support and practical coping strategies. Psychodynamic therapy goes deeper — exploring unconscious patterns, unresolved past experiences, and early relational dynamics that are fuelling the depression. At Ascent Psychology in Brisbane, psychodynamic therapy is the primary treatment approach because it produces more meaningful and lasting change, not just short-term relief.

Yes. Unresolved emotional experiences from childhood — including attachment difficulties, loss, trauma, or neglect — are among the most common underlying causes of depression in adults. Psychodynamic therapy is specifically designed to explore these early experiences and their lasting emotional impact. Brisbane clients at Ascent Psychology regularly find that understanding the origins of their depression is the key to finally moving through it.

Ascent Psychology takes a depth-oriented, psychodynamic approach to depression — focusing on the underlying emotional and relational patterns driving low mood, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all symptom management model. Led by Senior Clinical Psychologist Francisco Rivas, who holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and postgraduate training in Psychotherapy, the practice offers highly personalised, evidence-based depression treatment in a boutique, private setting in Brisbane. Sessions are available in both English and Spanish, with telehealth options also available.
